Team / Collection: Team Card Swap

Swap Date: January 2026

Today I’m sharing a beautiful card created by Joanne Whittaker.

This card was created for a team card swap in January 2026.

This one made me smile straight away, because one of the cogs spins.

That was the real “wow” moment for me.

This is a landscape book-fold card that opens from the side, like a book.

It has a strong layered design with lots of texture, but the interactive spinning cog is what really brings the card to life.

Let’s take a closer look

This card uses a landscape book-fold layout, opening from the side like a book.

The front is layered with different gears, textures, and background stamping.

The focal point is the large cog in the centre.

What makes it special is that the cog spins, which draws your eye straight in and invites interaction.

The mix of metallic gold, black, and neutral tones adds contrast while still keeping the design balanced.

The layers are arranged so nothing feels too heavy on one side.

Let’s explore the card front

The main focal point (the part your eye looks at first) is the large layered cog in the centre.

It is built up using multiple die-cut pieces, which gives it depth and dimension (it looks raised and not flat).

The spinning element makes this focal point interactive (you can move it), turning it into the star of the card.

Around the focal point, smaller gears and background stamping create texture (visual interest and detail) and a sense of movement.

The colour palette includes Early Espresso, Lost Lagoon, Basic Black, and gold foil.

These colours work together to create a slightly steampunk feel (mechanical, vintage style with gears and metal tones) while still staying warm and balanced.

The sentiment is placed to the side, which helps keep the centre area clear for the moving element.

This placement also helps guide the eye across the card.

Small details like splatters, texture (extra visual detail), and layering help fill the space without making it feel too busy.

Everything works together to create a cohesive design (all parts feel like they belong together).

Let’s take a look inside

Inside the card, the design is kept clean and simple.

There are two message panels (areas to write your message), which gives you plenty of space to add your own words.

Light stamping has been added in the background, which helps carry the theme through from the front of the card.

This creates continuity (the inside and outside feel connected).

The layout is balanced and uncluttered, making it easy to write without distraction.

Even though the inside is simple, it still feels finished and thoughtfully designed.

A little takeaway for you

A card doesn’t have to do everything to feel special. Sometimes one interactive element (something that moves or changes) is enough to create a strong “wow” moment. You might like to try: • Adding a simple spinning element using a brad or small spinner • Keeping your base design simple so the movement stands out

Tip

Make sure your spinning piece is not too tight, so it can move freely.

Start simple, explore, and see what happens.

Why This Design Works

This design works because the focal point (the main area your eye is drawn to) is clear and strong.

The spinning cog adds movement (something that moves), which creates interest and makes the card interactive.

The layers add texture (visual detail) and dimension (raised effect), helping the card feel more detailed without being overwhelming.

The colours are balanced, with metallic gold and darker tones creating contrast while still working together.

The layout guides your eye across the card, with the sentiment placed to the side so the centre remains the focus.

Everything works together to create a cohesive design (all parts feel connected and belong together).

👉 One simple moving element can completely change how a card feels.

Final Thought

Sometimes it’s not about adding more…

it’s about adding something different.

A little movement,
a small surprise,

can turn a card into something memorable.
